Antinuclear campaign ICAN wins Nobel Peace Prize

The Norwegian Nobel Committee, warning of a rising risk of nuclear war, awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday to a little-known international campaign group advocating for a ban on nuclear weapons.

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) describes itself as a coalition of grassroots nongovernment groups in more than 100 nations. It began in Australia and was officially launched in Vienna in 2007.

“We live in a world where the risk of nuclear weapons being used is greater than it has been for a long time,” said Berit Reiss-Andersen, the leader of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

In July, 122 nations adopted a U.N. Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, although the agreement does not include nuclear-armed states such as the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France.

　grassrootsを取り上げます。直訳で考えると「草の根」ですが、ここではどのような意味で用いられているのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「一般大衆の、草の根の」とありました。名詞としての意味もあり、その場合は「一般大衆、草の根」を表します。

　LDOCEには “the grass roots” の形で “the ordinary people in an organization, rather than the leaders” と定義されています。

　語源を調べると、Online Etymology Dictionaryには “1650s, from grass + root (n.). The image of grass roots as the most fundamental level of anything is from 1901; U.S. political sense of "the rank and file of the electorate" (also grassroots) is attested from 1912; as an adjective by 1918.” とあり、もともとは草の根のように土台となるレベルを表す言葉でしたが、それが発展し、後に政治の方面で用いられるようになったことがわかりました。（aqua）
