EDITORIAL: More than rosy promises needed to secure future of social security
In announcing his intention to call a snap election, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledged to dramatically widen the scope of social security benefits.
“We will change the social security system into one that benefits all generations. I have made the decision in response to the rapid aging of the nation’s population amid low birthrates,” he said in a news conference on Sept. 25.

“rosy”/rˈəʊzi/を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「〈将来・事態などが〉バラ色の・有望な・楽観的な」とありました。この単語は「バラ」を表す“rose”からきています。確認のためにLDOCEも引いたところ、“seeming to offer hope of success or happiness”と定義されていました。「バラ色の人生」というように、日本語では希望に満ちた状態を「バラ色」で表現することがありますが、まさに“rosy”をあてることができそうです。日本語の「バラ色」にはネガティブなイメージがあまりないように思いますが、英語の“rosy”はときにネガティブイメージで用いられるそうです。『ウィズダム英和辞典』の定義に「楽観的な」とありましたが、“rosy forecast”「楽観的な見通し」というような用例もインターネットでは多く提示されていました。(Blue Sky)
