　東京都の小池知事と大阪府の松井知事は会見を開き、今回の衆院選において「日本維新の会」と「希望の党」は選挙協力をする方針であることを明らかにしました。

The governors of Tokyo and Osaka have agreed to cooperate in the upcoming Lower House election.

Tokyo Governor and president of the newly-formed party Hope, Yuriko Koike, met Osaka Governor and Nippon Ishin Leader Ichiro Matsui in Osaka on Saturday.

They were joined by the governor of Aichi Prefecture, Hideaki Omura.

In a news conference, Koike said Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's economic policy is reaching a dead end, and that reform needs to be carried out on a regional basis.

Koike said their parties will each field candidates in separate constituencies to avoid competition. She said her party will not run candidates in single-seat constituencies in Osaka.

　今回取り上げるフレーズは、“single-seat constituency” です。『ジーニアス英和辞典第５版』(大修館) によると“constituency” で「有権者、選挙民」という意義があるといえます。また “single-seat constituencies” を調べたところ、手元の辞書には意味が記載されていなかったため、ネットの和訳サイトをみると「小選挙区、一人区」という意味がありました。
「小選挙区制」は一選挙区に対して得票数の一番多かった一人のみが当選する選挙制度のことです。つまり、 “single-seat constituency” は、有権者がたった一つの席に座る人を選ぶ選挙区を指しているため「小選挙区」と訳されることがわかります。他にも“small electoral districts”や “single member district” さらには “single‐member constituency” など「小選挙区」という意味をなすフレーズが存在しています。それぞれ確認すると、一つの選挙区から一人の議員を決めるという「小選挙区制」の原則に適しているフレーズだと窺えます。(Hapidra)
