“dictatorship”/dɪktéɪtɚʃɪ̀p/を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「独裁[専制]政治」や「独裁国家」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“government by a ruler who has complete power”と定義されています。“dictatorship”は“dictator”「独裁者」と“-ship”「状態」が合わさってできている表現です。ちなみに、動詞の“dictate”には「強く命令する、指令する」という意味がありますが、そこから“dictator”の「独裁」という意味が生まれたのだと思います。(Blue Sky)
