Tokyo governor to head new party
The new party has won over defectors both from the LDP - a senior vice-minister of the Cabinet Office, Mr Mineyuki Fukuda, yesterday jumped ship - and from other opposition parties.
The main national opposition Democratic Party is haemorrhaging lawmakers despite an internal party vote for a new leader earlier this month in a bid to steady the ship. Former foreign minister Seiji Maehara is now its party chief.

今回注目した表現はjump shipです。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）を引いたところ、「船から脱走する」、「一目散に逃げる」、「仕事を捨てる（変える）」などと載っておりました。Oxford Dictionary of English(Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)にも、 "to leave an organization that you belong to, suddenly and unexpectedly"などと定義されておりました。以上から突然の辞職と離党を表していると考えられます。
次段落でもsteady the shipとshipをもう一度用いて表現している点も面白いなと思いました。 (Gomez)
