“relax the rules”を取り上げます。“relax”は「くつろぐ、休む」といった意味の基本語彙ですが、「〈規則・規制など〉を緩和する」という意味でも使うことができます。(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。確認のためにLDOCEも引いてみたところ、こちらでは“to make a rule or law less strict”と定義されていました。コロケーションとして、“relax rules / regulations / controls”が示されていました。今回の記事でも“relax the rules”が使われています。ちなみに、日本語にもなっている名詞形の“relaxation”には、「«規則・規制などの»緩和」という意味があります(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。ニュースなどで時々耳にする「規制緩和」は１文字で“deregulation”と表現することが多いように思いますが、“relaxation of regulations”と表現することも可能です。(Blue Sky)
