Fishing, farming hit by fall slump

The supply outlook for traditional autumn foods is not good, as recent poor catches of saury and salmon continued this year and farmers struggled with small fruit and vegetable harvests due to the lack of sunlight. Typhoon No. 18 also damaged agricultural products when it swept across Japan.

The port of Miyako, Iwate Prefecture, traditionally receives a large volume of saury from fishermen, making it one of the major ports of this kind in the Sanriku coastal area. But while the saury catch usually begins in late August, this year there had been no catch landed at the port as of mid-September.

In Chiba Prefecture, Japan’s largest producer of nashi pears, the protracted rain and other factors caused a fungal disease in plants that left black spots on fruits and leaves. Pear farmers said they suffered greatly this year due to the long period of rain, lack of sunshine and pear disease.

　fungalを取り上げます。後ろにdiseaseとあることから、植物に起こる病気の種類であることが予想できます。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「きのこの（ような）；菌（性）の、菌による」とありました。これの名詞形fungusは「1きのこ　2菌類（細菌、かびなど）」という意味になります。
　きのことの関連が気になり語源を調べてみると、 “1520s, "a mushroom," from Latin fungus "a mushroom, fungus;" used in English at first as a learned alternative to mushroom (funge was used in this sense late 14c.).” とあり、ラテン語できのこを意味するfungusがそのまま残ったことがわかりました。（aqua）
