Japan-U.S. N-power deal set for extension
WASHINGTON — The Japanese and U.S. governments are making arrangements to enable the automatic extension of a bilateral nuclear energy cooperation agreement due to expire in July 2018, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.
The United States currently has no intention of seeking to renegotiate or abandon the pact formally known as the Agreement for Cooperation Between the Government of Japan and the Government of the United States of America Concerning Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy (see below), a U.S. State Department spokesperson told the Yomiuri.
Japanese government sources have also indicated its position is to allow the agreement to be extended. “It forms the foundation of Japan-U.S. nuclear cooperation,” one source said.
The agreement came into force in 1988 and allows Japan to reprocess spent nuclear fuel, among other measures. It is a pillar of Japan’s nuclear energy policy.
