Lucy, the mutt in question, was also rewarded with a hearty reserve of dog food by officials of the Namerikawa Police Station on Sept. 5.

“The action Lucy took to defend her family is so touching,” Mutsushi Hori, head of the police station, said in praise of the dog.

A little after 9 p.m. on May 4, a 47-year-old man broke into the woman’s house by using a spare key that was kept outdoors. Lucy, who was in a cage in a ground-floor living room, barked and hit her body against the cage many times over.

　red-handedを取り上げます。赤は危険を知らせる色という感じがしますが、どのような意味になるのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で引くと「（悪事を）行っている最中の、現行犯の」とありました。例として “She was caught red-handed trying to steal a necklace.” で「彼女はネックレスを盗もうとして現行犯でつかまった。」と説明されています。

　LDOCEには “catch somebody red-handed” で “to catch someone at the moment when they are doing something wrong” と定義されています。

　どうして赤色が現行犯と結びつくのか疑問に思ったので、Online Etymology Dictionaryで語源を調べると、 “1781, earlier red-hand (early 15c.), originally in Scottish legal writing, from red (adj.1) + -handed; presumably from the image of a murderer with hands still stained with blood.” とあり、殺人犯の手が血で汚れている様子からきたことがわかりました。犯行を行っている最中に逮捕されることは、血だらけの手と同様に動かぬ証拠となります。自分の体をケージにぶつけてまで危険を知らせようとしたルーシーの活躍は本当にお手柄だと思いました。（aqua）
