“rain out” を取り上げます。outがつくことで雨で完全に流される様子が浮かびます。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると「（略式）（行事・試合などが）雨で流れる」とありました。イギリス英語ではoffを用いて “be rained off” という形になります。
Merriam-Websterには “to interrupt or prevent (something, such as a sports event) by rain” と定義されています。
