梨が栽培されてきた歴史は意外と長いということを知りました。
VOX POPULI: ‘Nashi’ history filled with ‘kings’ crowned and dethroned
“Nashi” (Asian pears) are now in season. At supermarkets, Kosui and Hosui varieties occupy the fruit stand’s center stage. Just looking at those pale russet globes, piled high, fills my imaginary palate with their juicy, crispy texture.
These two cultivars have dominated the market since around the start of the current Heisei Era in 1989. But the history of nashi is replete with tales of the rise and fall of many varieties, just like during the civil war era in feudal Japan.
The most prominent variety toward the end of the Edo Period (1603-1867) was Awayuki. In the early years of the ensuing Meiji Era (1868-1912), Taihei and Kozo emerged.

LDOCEにはhorticultureで “the practice or science of growing flowers, fruit, and vegetables” と定義されています。語源を調べると、Online Etymology Dictionaryには “1670s, "cultivation of a garden," coined from Latin hortus "garden" (from PIE root *gher- (1) "to grasp, enclose"), probably on model of agriculture.” とあることから、ラテン語で庭園を意味するhortusとcultureが合わさってできたことがわかりました。(aqua)
