　国連児童基金は、世界各国にいる学校に行くことの困難な子供の割合がわずかに減少したことを発表しました。

The United Nations Children's Fund says there has been "nearly zero progress" in reducing the rate of out-of-school children in the past decade.

UNICEF said on Tuesday that 11.5 percent of school-age children --or 123 million-- are deprived of an education. This is down only slightly from 12.8 percent -- or 135 million-- in 2007.

The agency said the rate has stagnated due to poverty, protracted conflicts and humanitarian emergencies.

It said the conflicts in Iraq and Syria have deprived 3.4 million children of their education.

　この語は、ラテン語で水が淀んでいる様子を表す “stagnans”の動詞系 “stagnare”から成り立っているということがわかりました。さらに、フランス語でもこのラテン語から派生して「停滞した」という意味で “stagnant” (男性一人が主語の場合) “stagnante” (女性一人が主語の場合) “stagnants” (男性複数人が主語の場合) “stagnantes” (女性複数人が主語の場合) といった4つの語があるということも新たに知りました。(Hapidra)
