A licensed tax accountant has admitted to killing cats with scalding water, a blow torch and pliers in grisly acts that were posted on the Internet, police said Aug. 29.
Tokyo police said Makoto Ooya, 52, who lives in the Mikura district of Saitama city’s Minuma Ward, was arrested on suspicion of violating the law on welfare and management of animals.
They said Ooya has admitted to killing at least 13 cats from January 2016 to April 2017 at an abandoned house in Fukaya city, Saitama Prefecture, but he does not believe that he broke the law.

scalding /skɔ́ldɪŋ/ に注目しました。後ろにwaterが続くことから、 “scalding water” で熱湯という意味になるのだろうと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると「1（湯などが）沸騰している； やけどをするような； （焼けつくように）暑い 2（批判などが）痛烈な」とありました。
Merriam-Websterには “hot enough to scald” や “having or producing the feeling of being burned “ などと定義されています。
上記の英和辞典によると、動詞の形scaldの項目には「（熱湯、蒸気などで）（体の一部など）をやけどする」とあり、火によるやけどはburnを用いるとのことでした。これを期にどちらもおさえておきたいです。（aqua）
