N. Korea likely used Guam to hide actual path of missile launch
SEOUL--North Korea’s recent provocations and maneuvers appear to have been tactics intended to confuse Japan, the United States and South Korea about the course of its Aug. 29 missile launch, defense experts said.

On Aug. 15, the online edition of The Rodong Sinmun, North Korea’s official newspaper, carried an image that showed the trajectory of the Hwasong-12 missile toward Guam from a site near Sinpo, a city facing the Sea of Japan.
But revealing such information would give the three countries the opportunity to deploy Aegis destroyers installed with SM-3 interceptor missiles to thwart the test.
The countries could also pre-emptively strike the launch area of North Korea’s missiles.
