Poem on ancient clay bowl offers clues to how hiragana spread

An earthenware bowl engraved with a poem written entirely in hiragana more than 1,000 years ago about the sorrows of parting was unearthed at an archaeological site here.

Researchers said the find offers fresh clues on the spread of the phonetic writing system from Kyoto, which was then the capital of Japan, to local regions.

The clay bowl is almost perfectly preserved. It was unearthed in the ruins of a residence that existed in the Heian Period (794-1185) in the Kekachi archaeological site.

　earthenware /ɝ́θənwɛ̀r/ を取り上げます。後ろにbowlが続くことを考えると、「土でできた」という意味を表しているのだろうと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、形容詞または名詞で「陶器（の）、土器（の）」とありました。LDOCEには “an earthenware pot, bowl etc is made of very hard baked clay” と定義されています。

　earthenとwareに分解して考えます。まずearthは「土、土壌」を表していて、形容詞の形は「陶器の、（床、壁などが）土でできた」という意味のearthenになります。次にwareですが、こちらは「1（普通は合成語で）製品、用品；（食）器」（『ライトハウス英和辞典』）とあることから、これらが合わさって上記の意味になったことがわかりました。（aqua）
