6 held over illegal umbilical blood administration

Police arrested six people Sunday, including a doctor, for their alleged involvement in the illegal administration of umbilical cord blood to patients in Tokyo and elsewhere.

A joint investigative team set up by Ehime and other police suspect the six violated the law for the safety of regenerative medicine. This is believed to be the first case in which violation of the law is suspected.

Arrested were Tsuneo Shinozaki, 52, head of a company based in Tsukuba that sold the umbilical cord blood, his 50-year-old wife, Nobuko, and Shinsuke Shuto of Tokyo, a 40-year-old doctor who administered the blood without making required notification.

umbilical cordを取り上げます。umbilicalは /ʌmbílɪk(ə)l/ と発音されます。 “umbilical cord blood” とあることから、臓器かどこか体の一部を表しているのだろうと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で引くと「（解剖）臍帯、へその緒」とありました。

　LDOCEには “a long narrow tube of flesh that joins an unborn baby to its mother” や “a strong feeling of belonging to or a strong feeling of relationship with a particular place, person, organization etc” と定義されています。

　語源を調べてみると、 “"pertaining to the navel," 1540s, from Medieval Latin umbilicalis "of the navel," from Latin umbilicus "navel" (see umbilicus).”（Online Etymology Dictionary）とあり、ラテン語でへそを意味するumbilicusという言葉からきていることがわかりました。
