　スペイン・バルセロナなどであわせて15人がなくなったテロ事件で、地元警察は12人のイスラム過激派からなる犯行グループのメンバーの中で、ここ最近になって過激思想に染まり、今回のテロに参加した人物もいると発表しました。

　今回取り上げるのは “drastic” / drˈæstɪk/ です。『ジーニアス英和辞典第５版』(大修館)によると、「思いきった、急激な」といった意味があるといえます。
また、英英辞典をみると“likely to have a strong or far-reaching effect; radical and extreme” とあります。ここから、以前と比較の差が大きくて、激しい様子を指すと定義されていることがわかります。
　さらに、“drastic” はもともとギリシャ語で「活発な、急進な」とニュアンスを持つ “ drân”の派生語である “drastós”からきているとわかりました。したがってこの文脈に沿って訳すと「急激な変化、急な変わり様」となることがいえます。
　私達の社会にも身近に存在する信仰や信念の向き合い方は人それぞれですが、それとどうやって均衡なバランスを維持して付き合っていくかを考えることが重要であると感じました。(Hapidra)
