奈良国立博物館は２日, 「第69回正倉院展」を10月下旬より開催すると発表しました。

“marquetry” / mɑrkɪtri / を取り上げます。一体どのような装飾品を指しているのか気になり, 『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で調べたところ, 「(木・象牙などの)象嵌」「はめ込み細工」とありました。ちなみに並立している “inlay” も「象眼」の意をもちます。
続いてMerriam-Webster.comで確認すると, “decorative work in which elaborate patterns are formed by the insertion of pieces of material (such as wood, shell, or ivory) into a wood veneer that is then applied to a surface (as of a piece of furniture)” と定義されていました。身近な例のひとつとして「箱根寄木細工」が挙げられます。(Cayu)
