For the 25-year-old Koseki, his joyous reaction was in contrast to his usual stoic demeanor as he combined with world record-holder Ippei Watanabe to give Japan a two-three finish, marking the first time the nation has won multiple medals in a world championships swimming event.

　showdown /ʃóʊdàʊn/ を取り上げます。showが見せるという意味を表していると考えると、最後の見せ場という意味になるのではないかと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「対決して決着をつけること、決定的対決（between, with）」とありました。

　LDOCEには “a meeting, argument, fight etc that will settle a disagreement or competition that has continued for a long time” と定義されており、長く続いた不一致や競争に決着をつけるという意味合いがあるようです。
