An eyesore over arguably Tokyo's most famous bridge is to be finally removed, although not in time for the 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.
An elevated section of the Metropolitan Expressway that was constructed over the Nihonbashi bridge as part of efforts to modernize the capital before the 1964 Summer Olympics remains a blot on the landscape.
However, in more recent years, local residents and even government advisory groups have taken aim at the expressway, saying it darkens an area that was considered a key part of the capital during the Edo Period (1603-1867).

eyesore /áɪsɔ̀r/ を取り上げます。目を意味するeyeに痛いという状態を表すsoreがくっついていますが、これらが組み合わさるとどのような意味になるのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると「目ざわり（な建物）」という意味が見つかりました。LDOCEには “something that is very ugly, especially a building surrounded by other things that are not ugly” と定義されています。
soreには炎症を起こしていて痛いという意味の他にも、人の感情を害するという意味もあるため、目で見て気分を害すると考えると上記の意味になるのだろうと思いました。この記事の中では、日本橋の上を通っている首都高速道路のことをeyesoreと表現しています。（aqua）
