Physicians here said they created a lung from pieces of two lungs and transplanted the assembled organ into a patient.

Okayama University Hospital said on July 2 that this was the first such lung transplant carried out in the world.

The engineered lung was produced from parts of both the left and right lungs of a female brain-dead organ donor in her 50s in Kagoshima Prefecture.

A patient in her 50s from Okayama Prefecture was the recipient.

Takahiro Oto, a professor at the hospital’s Transplant Center, said the recipient was suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which is characterized by breathing difficulties caused by inflamed, narrowed bronchi or the destruction of tissue to take in oxygen.
