Taiwan to lift ban on Japanese beef
Taiwanese food hygiene authorities on Monday unveiled plans to conditionally lift the region’s mad cow disease-related import ban on Japanese beef.
Taiwan plans to allow imports of Japanese beef taken from cows aged 30 months or younger. It hopes to remove the embargo as early as in September, after soliciting opinions from the public.
Taiwan banned beef imports from Japan following the outbreak of the fatal brain-wasting disease, formally called bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE, in the country in September 2001.
Currently, imports, mainly from the United States and Australia, account for 94 percent of beef consumed in Taiwan.

encephalopathy / ɪnsèfəlɑ́pəθi / を取り上げます。BSEは牛の脳の病気であることを考えると、encephalopathyは脳に関係する言葉だろうと思いました。手持ちの紙辞書では見つかりませんでしたが、電子辞書の『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版 大修館書店）には「（病理）脳障害、脳症」とありました。これに関連してencephalon /ɪnséfəlὰn / が「脳髄、脳」を表すことがわかりました。
Merriam-Websterには “a disease of the brain; especially : one involving alterations of brain structure” と定義されています。
記事の中で述べられている “bovine spongiform encephalopathy” は牛の脳がスポンジ状になる病気「牛海綿状脳症」となります。輸入の解禁にあたり、その条件として生後30ヶ月以下の牛の肉に限定すること、特定の部位をいくつか除くことなどが挙げられているようです。（aqua）
