Riders work up a lather on ‘onsen’ roller coaster in Oita park

It wasn't quite like taking a bath, but Tomofumi Ota still got lathered up as he rode the roller coaster at an "onsen" (hot spring) resort-themed park here that seeks to replicate the experience.

“So much foam was flying from the forward seats. It was an interesting roller coaster ride,” said Ota, 20, who rode the new attraction wearing only shorts.

The trial runs, carrying 17 volunteers and others in front of the media on July 5, were conducted ahead of the full-scale operations from July 29 to 31 as part of “Yuenchi Keikaku” (hot water amusement park project) at Beppu Rakutenchi.

　malfunction /ˌmælˈfʌŋk.ʃən/ を取り上げます。以前、裏ゼミでmalは悪いものを表すことを学びましたが、今回はfunctionにmalがついています。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、名詞では「（機械などの）不調、故障（in, of）」動詞では「（格式）（機械などが）正常に動かない、故障する」とありました。

　LDOCEには “a fault in the way a machine or part of someone’s body works” と定義されています。体の不調を表すときなどにも使われ、例として “a malfunction of the immune system” が取り上げられています。

記事に述べられている “a brake malfunction” はブレーキの故障を表していると考えられます。（aqua）
