Hungary’s Eastern ties radiate in porcelain
From its origin in a small Hungarian village, porcelain maker Herend has grown to become a well-loved brand known for producing the highest-quality ceramics. Visitors to the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, can learn all about its nearly two-century history by admiring the roughly 230 masterpieces currently on display.

The artisans also applied a painting style called trompe l’oeil — in which objects are depicted in realistic detail — to porcelain production. An ornamental item in this style from the late 19th century, for example, is such an accurate depiction of a plate of flowers, vegetables and fruits that it may actually whet the viewer’s appetite.
