A Japanese Budget Airline Has Apologized For Making a Disabled Passenger Crawl Onto a Plane

A budget airline in Japan has apologized for making a disabled passenger crawl up a set of stairs to board an aircraft earlier this month.

Vanilla Air staff told Hideto Kijima that they would only let him onto his flight from Amami back to Osaka on June 5 if he could make it up the gangway unassisted, BBC reports. Kijima, who runs a non-profit cataloging accessibility issues for tourists to Japan, was paralyzed from the waist down following a school rugby injury.

　gangwayを取り上げます。gangというと危ない人たちのことを連想してしまいましたが、違う単語のようです。

　Oxford Dictionary of English(Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 “a raised platform of walkway providing a passage”、 “a passage between rows of especially in a theatre or aircraft”とのことでした。

　『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「タラップ，渡橋，連絡通路」、「（座席間の）通路」などと載っておりました。また「どいたどいた！道をあけろ！」という使い方もできるようです。

　似たような単語で “gangplank”があり、こちらはgangwayより少し小さめのタラップのことを指すようです。（Gomez）
