　富士山では山開きを迎え、登山のシーズンが始まりました。

Mt. Fuji climbing season starts, but 1st sunrise view is no-show

Mount Fuji opened to climbers July 1, but a raging rainstorm and cloud cover dashed the hopes of the 80 or so people who reached the summit to view the season's first sunrise.

The opening of the Yoshidaguchi hiking trail starting in Yamanashi Prefecture will be followed July 10 with that of the three other routes emanating from Shizuoka Prefecture.

Having scaled the 3,776-meter-high mountain, Japan’s tallest, the climbers waited for sunrise at 4:21 a.m., but clouds and foul weather obscured the view. The temperature was five degrees.

　summit /sˈʌmɪt/ を取り上げます。サミットと聞くと「首脳会議、サミット」がまず思い浮かびましたが、この記事では富士山の頂上という意味で用いられています。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で確認してみると、4つ目に「（山などの）頂上、頂（top）（of）」とありました。

　Merriam-Websterには “top, apex ; especially : the highest point : peak” と定義されています。

語源は「ラテン語で一番高いところの意」で、sumと同じ語源であることがわかりました。sumの項目を引いてみると「古代ローマ人は計算の合計を一番上に書く習慣があったことから」とのことでした。（『ライトハウス英和辞典』）

なお、見出しにあるno-showは「ホテルなどに予約をしているのにもかかわらず結局やってこないお客」を指す業界用語です。そこから「約束をすっぽかす人」、「肩すかし」などの意味が派生しました。（aqua）
