Counterfeit temple gate in Asakusa keeps tourists happy

The roof of Asakusa's famed Kaminarimon gate might be hidden, but it is also in full view.

The answer to this riddle is that while the roof over the southern entrance to Sensoji temple is having its 9,500 tiles replaced, a full-scale photograph of said roof is covering the repair work.

And it looks amazingly realistic so as not to disappoint sightseers, 30 million of whom pass through or near the gate every year.

Major construction company Taisei Corp. has just begun the renovations that involve replacing the thousands of tiles as well as repairing the roof itself.

The work is expected to be completed in October.

　気になった表現はsightseer /sáɪtsír/ を取り上げます。sightseeingの語尾が人を表すerの形になって「観光客」を表すことができるのかと意外に思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で確認してみると、「観光客」とありました。

　LDOCEには “someone, especially a tourist, who is visiting a famous or interesting place” と定義されています。

　雷門の屋根瓦が1枚剥がれ落ちているのが発見されたことがきっかけで工事が始まり、大きな事故が起きる前に対策に乗り出すことができたそうです。（aqua）
