気になった語は “abattoir” / æbətwɑː / です。『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で調べたところ, 第一に「屠殺場」とありました。ここから, ボクシングのリングなど, 肉体を酷使する場所も表すそうです。Dictionary.comには, “a slaughterhouse” と定義されていました。表記からもイメージがつくように, 語源はフランス語とされており, “to strike down” を指す “abattre”, そして特定の場所を示す “-oir” で成り立っています。(Merriam-Webster.com)(Cayu)
