気になった語は “seethe” / siːð / です。『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で調べると, 第一に「沸騰する(boil)」と記されていました。ここから, 「沸きかえる」「騒然とする」といった状況を示します。また形容詞では “seething” と表され, 動乱の様子などを指すことがわかりました。Merriam-Webster.comには, “to be in a state of rapid agitated movement” と定義されています。
さらに語源を確認したところ, リトアニア語で “storms” を意味する “siausti” であるとありました(同英英辞典)。「見る」でお馴染みの “see” とは直接関係がないようです。(Cayu)
