見出しで使われている“angling for”を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、動詞で「«…を求めて»釣りをする«for»」とありました。LDOCEには釣りをするという用法についての記述はなかったのですが、“to try to get something you want without asking directly for it”という定義が示されていました。『ウィズダム英和辞典』ではこの定義に関しては、第２義に「«…を»遠回しに求める、それとなく得ようとする«for»」と訳があてられていました。
ちなみに、今回記事の中で“angle”に“-er”を付けた形の“angler”という単語が使われています。これは「魚を釣る人、釣り師」という意味ですが、趣味で釣る人のことを指しており、職業の漁師は“fisherman”を用いるそうです。(Blue Sky)
