和歌山県の北山川で、丸太を組んで作られた筏で急流下りをする「観光筏下り」が始まりました。

Forget about white-water rafting in an inflated dinghy and wearing a hard hat, and perhaps a safety harness.
For a new type of thrill, tourists to this rural part of western Japan are offered the opportunity to negotiate the swift-flowing Kitayamagawa river on log rafts used by centuries by the forestry industry.
But forget about sitting down. Here, participants stand on multiple wooden rafts linked together while they clutch handrails for support as an oarsman in front stands on logs bundled together and negotiates the current with a paddle.

dinghy /ˈdɪŋ.i/ を取り上げます。前にくることばinflateが空気を入れて膨らませるという意味であることを考えると、ボートのことを表しているようです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べてみると「1ディンギー（競走用の甲板のない小型ヨット） 2小ボート、救命ボート」とありました。救助の際に使われるあのオレンジ色の小さいボートのことをさすようです。 “a rubber dinghy” でゴムボートとなります。
LDOCEには “a small open boat used for pleasure, or for taking people between a ship and the shore” と定義されており、海の浅いところから岸までの乗り継ぎ用のボートであることがわかりました。
筏は全長約30メートルもあり、6キロを1時間ほどかけて下るそうです。先頭には筏師が乗り、見事な櫂さばきで舵取りをこなす姿が見られるようです。（aqua）
