“volatility” /vὰlətíləṭi/ を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「揮発性；(株価・為替などの)ボラタリティー、変動率；変わりやすいこと、移り気、気まぐれ；不安定(さ)」とありました。また、LDOCEでは形容詞形の“volatile”で載っており、“a volatile situation is likely to change suddenly and without warning”と定義されています。“volatility”の頭にきている“vol-”には“to fly”の意味が含まれているそうです。このパーツを持つ他の単語の例として“volant”があげられますが、こちらは「飛ぶことができる」という意味になっています。(Blue Sky)
