Atsuki’s mother, Akiko, 50, described how their family decided to donate Atsuki’s corneas to an eye bank in Tochigi Prefecture during an interview with The Asahi Shimbun.
After the accident, Atsuki was initially kept alive on a ventilator, but his body temperature dropped and his blood pressure was unstable.
Akiko realized that he probably wouldn’t pull through, but she asked the doctor to save him and to continue giving him cardiac massage.

今回取り上げる表現は、“cardiac massage”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)で“cardiac”を引いたところ、「心臓[病]の；(胃の)噴門の」とありました。“cardiac massage [compression]”で「心臓マッサージ」となります。また、THE FREE DICTIONARYでは“A resuscitative procedure that employs the rhythmic compression of the chest and heart in an effort to restore and maintain the circulation after cardiac arrest or ventricular fibrillation. Also called heart massage.”と定義されていました。英語では“massage”使わないのかと思いましたが、“heart massage”でも通じるようです。“cardiac massage”は医学的に用いられる表現だそうです。(Blue Sky)
