2009年に国の重要文化財に指定された名護市の泡盛工場は修復が進められてきましたが、9月に新たな姿でお披露目されることとなりました。
War-surviving Okinawa distillery under restoration
A wooden plant producing “awamori” distilled spirits that escaped damage from the bloody Battle of Okinawa in the late stages of World War II will reveal a new look in September after six years of careful repairs.
The Tsukayama distillery in Nago, Okinawa Prefecture, was designated as a nationally important cultural property in 2009.
A faint smell of rice malt hangs inside the distillery’s skeletal main building. All pillars and roof tiles of the building were numbered before removal and are being repaired with the help of aerial photos of the plant taken by the U.S. military.
The repair work has taken time as workers have used as much as possible parts that remain viable. Only damaged portions of the parts were replaced.
Since its founding in 1928, the distillery has continued in business except for a halt of a few years caused by weak sales.

distillery /dɪstíl(ə)ri/ を取り上げます。動詞のdistillには「(…)を蒸留する、(ウイスキーなど)を蒸留して造る」という意味がありますが、そこからdistilleryは「蒸留酒製造所」という意味になります。(『ライトハウス英和辞典』第5版 研究社) LDOCEには “a factory where strong alcoholic drink such as whisky is produced” と定義されており、強いお酒を造るというところがポイントとなるかと思います。
ちなみにビール(beer)を醸造するというときにはbrewを用いるので、bで始まる組み合わせで覚えたいです。(aqua)
