“off-color”を取りあげます。Oxford Living Dictionariesでは“Somewhat indecent or in poor taste.”と定義されています。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）では米略式で「（話・冗談などが）きわどい」とありました。“color”には「味、趣、変化」といった意味があり、そこに“off”が付くことで「品のない」といったニュアンスが含まれるようです。
ここでは、フィッシャーさんの男友達（ボーイフレンド？）へ宛てた「きわどい」内容の手紙があったことがわかります。
イギリスでは“off color”は「体調がよくない」として使われるようです。こちらは顔色が悪い様子が伝わってきます。(flyinbird)
