TANABE, Wakayama Prefecture--It's back to school for a bunch of police officers here who are doing a much better job as a result.

Eleven officers are attending the "English club" at Tanabe Police Station after being left frustrated in their failure to properly understand tourists.

“At first, I couldn’t at all understand the English our teacher was speaking,” said Toshihiro Nishio, 29, a police officer working for Tanabe Police Station's community affairs division. “But I gradually got the ability to understand the gist of what she’s saying.”
