Japanese authorities confirmed Monday that all nine people aboard a rescue helicopter that crashed in snow-covered mountains in central Japan have been pronounced dead.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said in a statement that the nine men — seven firefighters, an engineer and the pilot — were aboard a rescue helicopter that crashed during a training flight Sunday.

The helicopter, belonging to Nagano prefecture’s rescue unit, crashed on the side of Mount Hachibuse, about 150 miles northwest of Tokyo. TV footage showed the mangled aircraft buried in deep snow, sitting belly-up with its broken pieces scattered around.

　『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「破産した」と載っておりました。 また“go belly up”で「倒産する，死ぬ」と書かれておりました。bellyを動詞として使った “belly up”は、「[人・バーカウンター・テーブルに]近寄る[to]」となるようです。

　『新和英辞典』（第六版，研究社）によると、「打ちのめされた，破壊された；（特に）破産した」とのことでした。主にアメリカで使用されているようです。

　インターネットサイト Merriam-Websterによると、 “hopelessly ruined or defeated; especially : bankrupt”と定義されておりました。語源は魚の死骸の浮き方だそうで、1918年に最初に使用されたとのことです。

　「破産」や「倒産」といったニュアンスが大きいようですが、この記事では破壊された様を表していると思います。（Gomez）
