Jury still out on 'Premium Friday' catching on in Japan
Companies across Japan let workers punch out early Feb. 24 for "Premium Friday," a government-backed campaign to help address sluggish consumer spending and curb the country's notoriously long work hours.

The only killjoy on the horizon was an estimate by SMBC Nikko Securities Inc. that threw cold water on government plans to have Premium Friday take hold as a regular practice.
It reckoned that only 3.6 million workers in Japan would be able to leave work early one Friday a month. Even including civil servants, the securities firm calculated that only 6.5 percent of all workers would be affected.
Over the course of a year, the economic benefits of Premium Friday would only come out to about 63.5 billion yen ($563 million), it said.

気になった表現は“killjoy on the horizon”です。まず、“killjoy”は先日、Gomezさんが取り上げていたように「興味をそぐもの（人）」という意味があり、LDOCEでは“someone who spoils other people’s pleasure”と定義されています。
次に“on the horizon”を『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）でひくと「地平線」、「限界」の他に「兆しが見えて、起こりかかって」とありました。
「働き方改革」の実地と、娯楽にお金をもっと費やしてもらうという政府の前向きな兆しに対してわずか6.5％の人にしか影響がないという現実的な数値が表例えられています。(flyingbird)
