Windswept

People walk against a strong southerly wind on Monday in Minato Ward, Tokyo, when a low pressure system moved across the Sea of Japan. The temperature in Tokyo hit 19.1 C at noon. 　今回取り上げる表現は、見出しの“windswept”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「〈場所が〉風に吹きさらされた、吹きさらしの」とありました。

　LDOCEでは、“a place that is windswept is often windy because there are not many trees or buildings to protect it”と定義されています。

　“windswept”は人を対象にしても用いることができ、その場合には「(髪などが)強風を受けたように乱れた」という意味になります(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。その使われ方に関してLDOCEでは“hair, clothes etc that are windswept have been blown around by the wind”と定義されているので、実際に風に吹かれた様子も表すことができるのだと思います。(Blue Sky)。
