Breaking the ice at Sapporo Snow Festival pulls in the crowds

SAPPORO--Beautiful sculptures getting smashed to smithereens have drawn huge crowds in this northern city.

When a power shovel went in for the "kill" to reduce a magnificent snow sculpture to icy rubble on Feb. 13, several hundred spectators started clicking their camera shutters and gasping in shock.

The artworks were destroyed following the close of the 68th Sapporo Snow Festival the previous day.

　今回取り上げる表現は、"smithereens" /smìðəríːnz/です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「(粉々になった)断片」とありました。“smash [blow, blast] A to [into] smithereens”で「Aを粉々にする」という意味になるそうです。LDOCEにも“smash/blow etc something to smithereens”という形で載っており、"informal to destroy something by breaking it into very small pieces, or with an explosion"と定義されていました。
　日本語に「コテンパンにやっつける、完膚なきまでにたたきのめす」といった言葉がありますが、今回の“smithereens”を使った“knock into smithereens”で表現できるそうです(「英辞郎 on the WEB」)。(Blue Sky)
