Soldier shoots attacker at Louvre

A French soldier shot and wounded a man armed with a machete and carrying two bags on his back on Friday as he tried to enter the Paris Louvre museum in what police said looked like a terrorist attack.

The man shouted Allahu Akbar (God is greatest) and attacked another soldier before being shot near the museum’s shopping mall, police said, adding a second person had also been detained after acting suspiciously.

The attacker was alive but seriously wounded, the head of Paris police Michel Cadot told reporters at the scene, adding the bags he had been carrying contained no explosives.

　今回取り上げるのはmachete /məˈʃeti / です。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、「（中南米の）なた」という意味が見つかりました。電子辞書内蔵の『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版　大修館書店）には、「なた」の他に「山刀（やまがたな）（中南米、アフリカで砂糖きび伐採、武器などに使う）」という意味も載っておりました。
LDOCEには “a large knife with a broad heavy blade, used as a weapon or a tool” と定義されております。

　画像を検索してみると、刃の形がまっすぐなものもあれば、緩くカーブしたものもあることがわかりました。熱帯雨林を藪を刈りながら進んだり、農作物の収穫に用いたりするようです。
