In the last years of the Edo period (1603-1867), the Tokugawa shogunate opened the nation’s first Western-style horse racing facility in an enclave for foreigners.
Originally known as Negishi, or Yokohama Racecourse, the facility closed in 1943 during World War II.
Now, the birthplace of modern equestrianism in Japan is the location of the Equine Museum of Japan, which offers visitors a glimpse into the history of horses in the nation and a chance to interact with the noble animal.

今回取り上げる単語は、equestrianism（/ɪˈkwɛstrɪəˌnɪz(ə)m）です。
Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 “the skill or sport of house riding”とのことでした。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「馬術，乗馬，（オリンピック競技の）馬術競技」と載っておりました。形容詞系はequestrianで、「乗馬者，騎手」という名詞の意味も持ちます。
またOxford Dictionariesによると、 “Mid 17th century (as an adjective): from Latin equester belonging to a horseman (from eques horseman, knight, from equus horse) + -ian.”と語源が説明されておりました。元々はラテン語です。（https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/equestrian）
