今回取り上げる表現は、a bolt from the blueです。
Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)には、 “a sudden and unexpected event”と載っておりました。a bolt out of blueとも使われているようです。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「青天の霹靂」とのことでした。
成り立ちを知りたかったのでインターネットで検索したところ、 “The term actually refers to the projectile fired from a crossbow, which was used in ancient warfare. An ordinary bow shoots an arrow, but a crossbow shoots a projectile called a bolt. The crossbow had a much longer range than regular bows, and the person who was targeted sometimes couldn’t see the shooter, hence, “a bolt from the blue” when the projectile landed.”との記載がありました。（http://parade.com/248911/marilynvossavant/origin-of-the-term-bolt-from-the-blue/）
上記の英和辞典のboltの欄をよく見てみると、「（石弓・ボーガン・弓矢用の）太矢」と載っておりました。
突然矢が飛んで来たら、びっくりすることでしょう。まさに青天の霹靂です。
豆知識になってしまうのですが、『デジタル大辞泉』（小学館）によると「晴天の霹靂」は間違いであり、正しくは「青天の霹靂」だそうです。こちらも注意しておきたいポイントです。（Gomez）
