Freeze continues in Tokyo; snow warnings issued for wide areas
The mercury hit minus 2 degrees in central Tokyo early on Jan. 16, the third straight day of below-freezing temperatures in the capital, as a cold air mass continues to cover the Japanese archipelago.
Although the air mass has weakened, the Japan Meteorological Agency is issuing heavy snow warnings mainly along mountainous parts of northern and eastern Japan through the night of Jan. 16.

今回取り上げる表現は、“mercury”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、第４義に「(温度計・気圧計の)水銀柱(が示す温度[気圧])」とありました。この意味で用いられる場合、“the”を伴います。
LDOCEでは、“a heavy silver-white poisonous metal that is liquid at ordinary temperatures, and is used in thermometers”と定義されています。
“mercury”の第１義には「水銀」という意味がきています。温度計では水銀が用いられていることから、「温度計」という意味で使われるようになったのだと思います。(Blue Sky)
