Convenience stores make impact felt in growing deli market

Convenience stores’ presence in the delicatessen market is growing. With their close proximity to homes and increased lineup of products, convenience stores have been attracting customers who would otherwise have visited supermarkets and deli specialty shops.

Sales of deli products are expected to grow due to their convenience for the rising numbers of working women and elderly households. Consequently, competition is becoming fiercer.

Lawson Inc. has nearly doubled the number of soups available at its outlets compared to 2015. There are now nine kinds, and they are highly popular among women in winter.

In March last year, Lawson started cutting the prices of its own-brand deli products by 10 percent at the end of each month.

今回取り上げるのはdelicatessen /dèlɪkətésn/です。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、「デリカテッセン（調理済み食品や外国産ハム、チーズなどを売る店、売り場）」とありました。LDOCEには “a shop that sells high quality cheeses, salads, cooked meats etc” と定義されております。日本語の意味だけではわかりませんでしたが、お店で売っている商品の品質が高いという意味を含んでいるようです。

語源をOnline Etymology Dictionaryで調べてみますと、 “from German delikatessen, plural of delikatesse "a delicacy, fine food," from French délicatesse (1560s), from délicat "fine," from Latin delicates” とあり、もともとはラテン語からきていることがわかりました。
