The top news item searched on Google was the US election, followed by the Olympic Games in Rio, Brexit, the deadly nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida and the Zika virus.

Among celebrities who died in 2016, the most searched-for was Prince, followed by David Bowie, slain U.S. singer Christina Grimmie, British actor Alan Rickman and boxing legend Muhammad Ali.

今回取り上げる単語は、slay(slain)です。

Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 “〈archaic〉or〈literary〉kill (a person or animal) in a violent way”とのことでした。

sleanというで “strike, kill”という意味の昔の英単語が元で、オランダ語のslaanやドイツ語のschlagenも語源と関係しているとのことです。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「…を退治する，面白がらせる」などの意味の他に、ジャーナリズム用語で「（人を）殺害[虐殺]する」と説明されておりました。

以上から新聞などのジャーナリズムにおいて、slayはkillの婉曲した表現と言えるかと思います。（Gomez）
