岩手県岩泉町の小本川にあるサケの孵化場では、8月の台風10号により大きな被害を受けましたが、運営の立て直しに力を注いでいます。

Typhoon-hit town’s fishermen strive to see return of salmon

Their hatchery was completely destroyed by Typhoon No. 10 at the end of August, but fishermen here are putting up a good fight to save their livelihoods.

Members of the Omotohama fisheries cooperative association collected around 800,000 salmon eggs in about one hour from freshly caught salmon at a temporary facility in the town.

At 8 a.m., the workers had harvested the salmon at the mouth of the Omotogawa river.

After separating the egg-loaded female salmon from the males, they laid their catches down to collect the roe at the makeshift workplace, which is covered by a tarpaulin roof.

今回取り上げるのはtarpaulin /tɑːrˈpɑː.lɪn/ です。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、「タール塗り防水布　シート」とありました。LDOCEには “a large heavy cloth or piece of thick plastic that water will not pass through, used to keep rain off things” と定義されております。
どのようなものなのかを画像で検索してみると、ブルーシートのようなものであることがわかりました。
記事内での “tarpaulin roof” は防水シートでできた屋根のことを表していると考えられます。
