Watch your weight during year-end party

The year-end party season is here, and many of us are preparing to gorge on holiday food and drink and New Year osechi fare. But all this holiday overindulgence can take its toll on our health.

Tokyo-based Wit Co., which provides health care advice through the website Asuken, conducted a survey among about 14,200 people to determine if they had gained weight during the period from December 2014 to the following month. More than one-third — about 5,200 — said they had gained weight, with both men and women averaging an extra 1.7 kilograms.

今回取り上げるのはoverindulgenceです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、overindulgence自体は見つかりませんでしたが、動詞形のoverindulge /ˌəʊvərɪnˈdʌldʒ/ で「（…に）ふけり（夢中になり）すぎる（in）、（…）を過度に放任する、わがままにさせすぎる」とありました。LDOCEには “to eat or drink too much” や “to let someone have everything they want, or always let them do what they want” と定義されております。
overとindulgenceに分けて考えると、indulgenceには「好きなようにする（させる）こと、わがまま、甘やかし、（…に）ふけること、暴飲（食）（in）」（『ライトハウス英和辞典』）という意味があります。これにoverがつくことで、限度を越える意味合いが加わり、上記のような意味になると考えられます。
今回は前文の “many of us are preparing to gorge on holiday food and drink and New Year osechi fare” という部分を受けて、 “overindulgence”は「暴飲暴食」となるのではないかと思われます。（aqua）
