cobble together 復習
ソフトバンクがアメリカに500億ドル投資するニュースがありました。その件に関して，いつ，いくら投資するのかと疑問が浮かび上がっているようです。

今回取り上げる表現は，“cobble together”です。これは，以前ブログに取り上げられていましたが，「を不細工に継ぎはぎする」や「やっつけ仕事で仕上げる」という意味があります。さらにCambridge Dictionaryを確認すると，“ to do or make something quickly and not very carefully”と定義されています。あまり良い意味としては使われていないようですね。
“cobble”を見ていくと，様々な意味があります。名詞には，「（鉄道・道路舗装・壁用の）丸石，くり石」（＝cobblestone）や「丸石大の石炭」（＝cob coal）といった語義があります（『ジーニアス英和辞典』大修館書店）。動詞は，「〈靴〉を修繕する」や「丸石を敷く」，「丸石で舗装する」があり，後者の二つは，ヨーロッパの道を思い浮かべると分かりやすいかもしれません。
また，昨日の裏ゼミでやった英検プリントの中に“cobbler”があったことを思い出しました。意味は，「靴直し（店）」です。(Nao)
