今回取り上げるのは，“the Electoral College”という表現です。“college”と聞くと「大学」という意味を思い浮かべますが，この記事ではこれとは異なる意味で“college”が用いられています。

そこで，LDOCEで“college”を確認すると，“a group of people who have special rights, duties, or powers within a profession or organization”と定義されており，今回は「(共通の義務・権限・目的を持つ職業人の)団体，協会，学会」(『ジーニアス英和辞典』大修館書店)という意味で用いられているとわかります。これから，“the Electoral College”で「選挙人団」(“a group of people chosen by the votes of the people in each US state, who come together to elect the president, or a similar group in other countries”：LDOCE) と表せます。(ninetails)
